Where our Burgees Have Been

Many of our members were involved in the space program in the past some of them made some little arraignments.

APOLLO 13
THE BURGEE ABOVE AND A USPS ENSIGN FLEW ON APOLLO 13 (APRIL 1970) AND WERE SUPPOSED TO BE LEFT ON THE MOON. ONE OF OUR MEMBERS,  PENNOCK BOWEN, AN ENGINEER AT  NASA, WAS FRIENDS WITH THE ASTRONAUTS: JIM LOVELL, JACK SWIGERT AND FRED HAISE. AS YOU REMEMBER THERE WAS AN EXPLOSION ON BOARD ON THE WAY TO THE MOON AND THEY BARELY MADE IT BACK TO EARTH.  THE ASTRONAUTS PRESENTED PENNEY WITH THE ENSIGN AND BURGEE AND PENNEY PRESENTED THE FLAGS TO THE SQUADRON.  THE ENSIGN HANGS IN THE LIBRARY AT USPS HEADQUARTERS IN RALEIGH, NC. AND THE BURGEE STAYED WITH US..

THE PENNANT ABOVE FLEW ABOARD LOFT-1, THE FIRST PRIVATE COMMERCIAL ROCKET LAUNCH FROM CAPE CANAVERAL IN THE HISTORY OF THE U.S. SPACE PROGRAM, NOVEMBER 17, 1988.  SQUADRON COMMANDER CHARLES WOFFORD, SN, WAS LAUNCH DIRECTOR FOR E PRIME AEROSPACE CORPORATION.  THE ROCKET AND SCIENTIFIC PAYLOADS WERE LAUNCHED FROM PAD LAUNCH COMPLEX-47.
IN THE MUSEUM ON THE CAPE CANAVERAL AIR FORCE STATION EACH LAUNCH PAD HAS A LISTED HISTORY.  THS LAUNCH IS ONE OF THE EVENTS LISTED FOR THIS COMPLEX.
THE PAYLOAD WAS RECOVERED BY A COCOA BEACH SQUADRON VESSEL, BIG DADDY, OWNED BY MEMBER JIM MASCOLO. THE CREW WERE ALL MEMBERS: P/C AL BERCIN, JN; LT/C ED HRADESKY, SN; JIM CONNOLLY, P; DAVE WHALEY, S; P/C JIM KNEELAND, JN.
